My, how you will eat at Moe's.
That's Moe's Bistro & Coffee Shop, in Leola's Meadowbrook shops. It's at the site of the former La Terra Bakery & Antipasto Bar; Moe's not only occupies that space but has extra seating in what was a storefront next door. All in all, the restaurant seats just over 150 people.
And it has a lot to choose from when it comes to food.
The breakfast menu is big (for instance, four kinds of Eggs Benedict, $6.99-$9.99, are offered). The lunch menu is huge -- 11 salad varieties can be found, along with appetizers, soups, wraps, sandwiches, paninis, burgers and "Country Fare," because, hey, you never know when you're going to get a midday craving for Louisiana Chicken or Roasted Blackberry Chicken (both are $11.99).
One signature dish to try is "Mimi's Panini," a hearty combo of an 8-ounce Black Angus burger, crispy onion straws, bacon, Provolone cheese, lettuce, tomato and Thousand Island dressing. It's $7.99 and you won't leave hungry.
And then there's dinner, where you can start with a $4.95 appetizer of those onion straws, and work your way up to a meal of Slow Roast Turkey, filling (and we do say "filling," not "dressing" in Lancaster County, so Moe's gets it right), gravy and "a side of rich cranberry chutney," as the menu states. It's $11.99. If you're still in a home-cooking mood, you can always make room for "Mom's Baked Meatloaf" ($9.99), served with a mushroom demi-glaze.
If you have Italian fare on your mind, Moe's has seven selections from Bella Italia on the list; the most expensive dish is Seafood Pasta, which, for $15.95, will get you lump crab meat and shrimp tossed with penne pasta in a pesto Alfredo sauce. Mama Mia!
With that kind of variety, the menu at Moe's has an international mix.
"So far, I sell everything!" Mohammed "Moe" Khairat says. That reflects the restaurant's namesake.
Khairat is a native of Morocco, in North Africa. That country was once partially administered by France. "My grandmother lived in France for 45 years -- she still lives there," Khairat says.
Khairat came to Lancaster County in 2008, and gained experience working at such local establishments as the Pressroom, the Red Rose and Park City Diner. His restaurant opened "Feb. 8 -- a Wednesday, a snowy day" Khairat remembers, smiling. As the weather improves, he's planning to have outdoor seating. Moe's is in a busy shopping center, but one set on a hill above New Holland Pike, so traffic noise is minimal.
One of those outdoor tables might be a nice spot to grab a coffee and dessert; dessert and coffee beverage prices are provided on request, the menu states. But if you are indulging in something such as Chocolate Mousse, Tiramisu Torte or a cappuccino, you probably won't care about the cost. And if you are on the run, you can always buy assorted bags of flavored coffee to take home. As the label says "coffee good enough to bear our name," it must be good.
