Damage in a silo fire in Upper Leacock Township on Sunday was limited to the sawdust it contained, a fire official said.

Neighbors reported smoke coming from one of the storage silos at Ironstone Mills, 334 Quarry Road, at about 4:30 p.m., said Sam Huber, deputy chief of the Upper Leacock Fire Company.

About two feet of sawdust that had been left in the bottom of the silo had started smoldering, he said. No cause of the fire was determined.

About 30 firefighters from Upper Leacock, Eden, Witmer, West Earl and Lafayette fire companies responded.

They flushed the sawdust out of the silo with water, bringing the fire under control in about an hour, Huber said.

Firefighters also contained water runoff to keep it from reaching a nearby creek.

No one was injured, Huber said.

The metal silo and its unloading equipment were not damaged in the fire, he said. The lost sawdust was estimated to be worth about $500.

Frank D. and Frank L. Diem own Ironstone Mills, which Huber said converts sawdust into wood pellets.
