Ashes were placed on the foreheads of the faithful at many christian churches in Lancaster County on Wednesday.

The faithful are called upon to receive the mark of the cross on the first day of the 40-day Lenten season as a symbol of repentance and contrition in the days leading to Easter.

The Ash Wednesday ashes are a symbol of penance.
