A Lancaster city pool ravaged by flooding from Tropical Storm Lee will be repaired in time for summer, officials say.
Conestoga Pines Park Pool sustained about $150,000 in damage from September floodwaters that threatened to permanently close the facility. But the city recently learned the damage qualifies for disaster assistance from the state and federal emergency management agencies, which have agreed to pay for repairs.
The aluminum pool surface, which buckled from surging groundwater, will be repaired, as will the pool deck, the snack bar and the bathhouse. New filter and pumping equipment, refrigerators, cash registers and fencing also are planned.
"It's absolutely wonderful" that the pool will reopen, said Susan Landes, executive director of Lancaster Recreation Commission, which operates the city-owned facility.
Chester Pools, the Ohio company that built the pool in 1966, will in the coming weeks begin repairs to the pool surface, which sustained about $106,000 worth of damage. The city needs to hire contractors to replace the concrete decking and install new water pipes.
As part of the repair project, handicapped access to the pool will be improved, with a new ramp into the baby pool and a lift in the main pool.
Charlotte Katzenmoyer, the city's director of public works, said she expects the repairs to be completed by Memorial Day, the traditional start of the swimming season.
