Police didn't have to look far to find a man whom they say assaulted and robbed a taxi cab driver Sunday morning in East Lampeter Township.

Officers responding early Tuesday to a burglar alarm at M&S Auto, 2282 Old Philadelphia Pike, found the suspect, 26-year-old Dennis Maurice Bonneau, at the scene.

Investigators had identified Bonneau, of Lancaster, as a suspect in the robbery and assault Monday night, according to East Lampeter Township police Sgt. Marlene Leighty.

She said Detective Chris Jones was preparing to secure an arrest warrant for Bonneau on Tuesday.

"Night patrol was advised to be on the lookout for him," Leighty said. "I have to say, he made it pretty easy for us to find him."

Investigators allege it was Bonneau who assaulted and robbed a Yellow Cab driver around 2:30 a.m. Sunday in the 400 block of Greenland Drive in East Lampeter.

After being driven from Lancaster city to the location, Bonneau allegedly struck the male driver in the back of the head with a bottle after being told his fare was $17, police said.

The driver tried to flee but Bonneau allegedly punched and kicked him until he fell to the ground, police said. Bonneau then took an undetermined amount of cash from the driver's pockets, according to police.

The victim was treated at the scene.

Leighty said Tuesday afternoon that she wasn't sure how police were able to identify Bonneau as a suspect.

She said it was "a huge relief to have him in custody and be able to wrap this up in such a quick manner."

Bonneau is charged with aggravated assault and robbery, both felonies, plus misdemeanor theft by unlawful taking and summary theft of services.

He was arraigned by District Judge B. Denise Commins and committed to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $150,000 bail.

Additional charges are pending for the Tuesday morning burglary at M&S Auto as well as a burglary the same day at A&B Motors, 2050 Lincoln Highway East.
