DISTRICT THREE BOYS' BASKETBALL: Lynn-sanity stuns Donegal

Palmyra backup guard Chris Lynn hit a shot with two seconds left to lift the Cougars over third-seeded Donegal in a District Three Class AAA first-round boys' basketball game Tuesday night in Mount Joy. And in the process he revised a word currently in vogue.

"Lynn-sanity," one of his teammates whispered to the 5-11 junior as he met with two reporters after the 50-49 victory.

It was every bit that. Lynn played little in the game, scoring four points, and was inserted by coach Pete Conrad at the end only because his outside shooting was needed when the Indians switched from man-to-man to a 2-3 zone for a possession or two.

They were back in man with 12 seconds left, when Palmyra, down 49-48, inbounded in its end. But Lynn nonetheless remained on the floor. And the plan was to run junior guard Adam Newhard off a double-screen and get him a shot at the top of the circle.

One problem, Conrad said: "They broke it down with some great defense."

Lynn, who had been one of the screeners, wound up in the right corner, where he took a pass from guard Colby Conway. He then ducked through some traffic as he drove from right to left, found himself in the clear when he reached the lane and dropped in an uncontested left-handed layup — he is a lefty — as the Cougar fans erupted.

"The lane was wide open," he said, "so I hit the shot. … All I saw was the ball go in the rim, and I just went crazy."

Donegal managed to get a leaning 3-point attempt from Jason Dietrich at the buzzer. But it was well off the mark, and just like that the Indians (20-4) saw their season come to an end.

Coach Ryan Butt thought the No. 14 Cougars (14-10) earned the victory largely through their grit.

"To put it bluntly, they outworked us," he said. "It's tough to win a game when you're outworked that badly."

The Indians, who led 49-45 with 1:10 left, did own a 40-30 rebounding advantage. But they failed to secure two big boards in the final minute. First a missed layup by Palmyra's Logan Stovall went out of bounds, off Donegal, with 57 seconds left, setting the stage for a 3-pointer by Newhard (12 points) some 10 seconds later. That cut the gap to 49-48.

Then the Indians' Matt Foltz missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with 14 seconds to play, and again the ball went out off Donegal.

Lynn took care of the rest. And when he met reporters he was wearing an Atlanta Hawks T-shirt. Turns out that ex-Hawk Mike Bibby is his favorite NBA player.

Mike Bibby?

"He's old," Lynn said, "but still …"

He also sits at the end of the Knicks' bench now, a forgotten soul amid the furor created by his celebrated teammate, Jeremy Lin.

But on Tuesday night Linsanity gave way, however temporarily, to Lynn-sanity. Small revision. Big moment.
