Fire struck a barn in Paradise Township on Tuesday, but the blaze was quickly extinguished before it could cause damage, an official said.

Shortly after noon, farm owner Benuel Esh and others were cutting steel bars used to reinforce a floor, Strasburg Fire Company Assistant Chief John Stoltzfus said.

They were working on the first floor of the 4,500-square-foot barn at 87 Peach Lane, near Route 896, Stoltzfus said.

"Sparks shot up through a small hole and started a fire on the second floor," he said. Some loose corn fodder on the second floor burned, creating a lot of smoke.

Someone at the farm reported the fire, Stoltzfus said.

Arriving firefighters saw heavy smoke and called for a second alarm, he said. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, he said.

About 40 firefighters from area companies responded, and they left the scene by 1 p.m.
