Nicole Kobie is quick to note that music and theater are among her favorite things.

The 17-year-old Conestoga Valley High School senior is an accomplished clarinetist, percussionist and vocalist.

She has brought her singing talents to the stage in school musicals such as "The Sound of Music" and "The Music Man," the latter of which is slated for April 13-15 at CV.

Nicole will be portraying the mayor's wife, Eulalie Shinn, whom she describes as a "real character" who comes out of her shell after Professor Harold Hill comes to River City, Iowa.

In her years at CV, Nicole has performed in several musicals and plays. Her deep, rich alto II voice has put her in good stead singing in "The Sound of Music" as Sister Berthe, one of the nuns in the convent who sabotages the Nazis' car so the von Trapp family can make its escape.

Nicole also has appeared in "Cyrano de Bergerac" as a nun and theater manager, in "Pride and Prejudice" as a nursemaid and "Beauty and the Beast" as a townsperson.

She also has enjoyed the thrill of seeing the Broadway show "In the Heights" and hopes to see "Anything Goes" in coming months.

Her love of theater is only rivaled by her passion for music. She has been a member of the marching band, concert band and concert choir at school. She plays the clarinet and contralto clarinet and plays percussion in the marching band, including marimba, xylophone and vibraphone. She is a member of the Tri-M music honors society.

"I started playing clarinet in fourth grade. I loved it right from the start," said Nicole, who has participated in the music festival at Susquehanna University, the Honors Band and County Band.

Her singing started even earlier. At the age of 2 or 3, she began singing along with her mother at bedtime. Over the years, she appeared in church musicals at Mellinger Mennonite Church, as far back as first grade. She still is involved in church programs, including youth group and teaching preschool Sunday school.

The daughter of David and Julia Kobie, she has 15-year-old twin brothers, Matthew and Paul, who are freshmen at CV. Her father works at Flexsteel Industries and her mother is a secretary in the Conestoga Valley School District.

Nicole already has made her college choice. She will be headed to Millersville University in the fall, where she plans to major in elementary education and minor in special education. She hopes to incorporate her love of music into her time in college.

Lively and outgoing, Nicole has many other interests. She works part time as hostess at Bird-in-Hand Family Restaurant. She also has worked at Dutch Wonderland, helping youngsters get safely seated at the lagoon ride.

At school, she has been a member of student council and was an editor for the high school yearbook. She is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Students. A top student at Conestoga Valley, she lists history as one of her favorite subjects.

Nicole has traveled to Costa Rica on a missions project, where she helped to rebuild and paint a church in a tiny town that had been damaged by storms.

She also enjoyed a 16th-birthday trip to Walt Disney World in Florida and youth group trips to Pittsburgh and Columbus, Ohio.

In her free time, Nicole enjoys reading books by one of her favorite authors, Meg Cabot, as well as "The Hunger Games" series. She spends time with friends at coffee shops or seeing the latest movies. She is also a fan of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Philadelphia Phillies.

One of her newest interests is photography. When she edited the yearbook, she had the opportunity to attend a photography seminar at Gettysburg College. That started her love of taking abstract and nature photographs, which she hopes to continue.

"I have a lot of interests, and photography is just one more thing I want to learn more about," Nicole said. "There is much more, too."
