The Country Hearth Inn, for many years operated as the Host Town, will close its doors Wednesday.

The shutdown will come after years of turbulent times for the 30 Keller Ave. property, near Lititz Pike.

Police were regularly called to the property to investigate thefts, assaults, drug offenses and other incidents.

Meanwhile, the 50-year-old motel was running into serious financial problems.

The motel, with 193 rooms, was acquired at sheriff's sale in November by mortgage lender Susquehanna Bank.

Lititz-based Susquehanna had foreclosed against the borrower, Shan Holdings, which defaulted on its $3.4 million loan two years ago.

"It'll be closed down and fenced off. Obviously, the bank wants to sell it off," Michael Turner, the motel's general manager, said.

County records list the property as having a fair market value of $6 million.

Turner said Thursday that the motel, with 15 employees, has been under new management since November.

The management firm was hired by a receiver that was court-appointed to preserve the property as part of the foreclosure proceedings.

"The old girl's tired, I'll tell you," Turner said.

The motel opened in 1962 as the U.S. Motel, which quickly was changed to the Host Motel.

Its developers changed its name again, to the Host Town, when they opened the Host Farm on Lincoln Highway East in 1966.

Shan Holdings bought the property in 1994, according to newspaper files.

The Manheim Township property, which backs against the Lancaster Amtrak station, has operated under several names since then.

It was not immediately known when Shan Holdings obtained the Country Hearth franchise, a "flag" that's offered by Atlanta-based America's Best Franchising Inc.
