Manheim Township's "Spring Fling" was designed as a family-oriented community celebration, featuring games, food and the like.
But low attendance canceled the event in Overlook Community Campus last year, and now shortages with the township's budget appear to be scrapping the event for good.
Manheim Township officials, hoping to cut a $3-million-plus budget shortfall, have selected a final list of items to be trimmed for 2012, and the spring event is one of them.
Also to be canceled for 2012 is the "Fall Into Fitness" 5K run, which had been held the last five years, also at Overlook, township officials said during a budget review last week.
Eliminating these two events is expected to save the township $7,250.
The full list of likely cuts in the township's proposed budget for 2012 has been announced, and they are expected to eliminate $1.2 million of the overall $3.2 million gap.
The items tentatively chosen during a meeting last Monday, which are to be officially voted on by the township commissioners on Feb. 13, are:
• Eliminating, at least for 2012, the township's transferable development rights program, a farmland-preserving effort. This would save $600,000.
• Reducing production of the township's newsletter, which now comes out each month, by 50 percent, saving $48,000. Details on how the newsletter would be made available to residents once the cuts are made have yet to be finalized.
• Reducing funding for the township's sign-improvement program, saving $50,000.
• Reducing an improvement effort along Erbs Quarry Road from a complete reconstruction to a smaller project, saving $275,000.
• Reaching an agreement with the township police to reduce a police pay increase for 2012, saving $120,000.
• And modifying the township's contract with its Overlook Community Foundation and a planned waterline extension to the dog park in Overlook, saving some $74,000.
The commissioners also relieved financial pressure on the capital reserve fund by transferring some parks projects from it to another fund, a capital reserve fund just for parks.
The five-member commissioners' board, which includes two new members who took office in January, had recently voted to re-open the 2012 budget.
The amended township budget is also now available for public review either at the township office, 1840 Municipal Drive, at the Manheim township library in Overlook and on the township website, www.manheimtownship.org.
The revised 2012 budget is to be considered for adoption by the commissioners on Feb. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the township building.
