The closing of Maytown Elementary, one of the oldest schools in the state, will be the centerpiece of three days of celebration Memorial Day weekend.
The celebration — Maytown School: The Final Bell — begins Saturday, May 26, at 9 a.m. with a tour and exhibits at the school. Tours will continue until noon.
A pig roast, compliments of Harvey's, will run from 4 to 7 p.m. A three-hour sock hop starts at 7 p.m. and ends with fireworks at 10 p.m.
Exhibits and tours will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 27.
On Monday, May 28, the official school closing ceremony begins at 2 p.m., followed by a Maypole dance at 3 p.m. and a parade at 5 p.m.
According to its history on the school's website, Maytown started as an elementary school in 1860.
It became Maytown Central High School in 1892 and Maytown High School in 1935.
Maytown has been praised for its blend of old wooden floors — original to the school — and modern amenities like its computer lab.
Unfortunately, time and cost have caught up with the school and Maytown students will soon be relocated as part of a district-wide grade realignment and school building consolidation plan.
Superintendent Susan Ursprung said the celebration is a joint effort between the community and the school district.
"Please be aware that not all activities will be held on the school property. More information about those specific locations will come at a later date," she said Friday.
