Tuesday wasn't the first time Lampeter-Strasburg's boys' basketball team faced a zone defense.

Just the first time the Pioneers have faced one like Donegal's.

In basketball terms, the Indians have length — height and long wing spans — and they used their physical attributes to their advantage, holding the L-L Section Three co-leaders to their lowest point total this season in a 41-34 final at L-S.

"We haven't seen a lot of zones but when we have it wasn't a big deal as far as us attacking it," Pioneers coach John Achille said. "Give (Donegal) credit. We had trouble finding the seams."

"We have length with our guards and big guys," Indians coach Ryan Butt said. "Our guys used their long arms to take up space, take away any gaps."

Martin Dietrich scored a team-high 11 and hauled in a game-best 10 rebounds as Donegal (12-1 L-L, 18-1 overall) forged a tie for first place with three games remaining in the regular season.

Jason Dietrich added 10 points for the Indians, who won their eighth straight since a 61-46 loss to L-S in Mount Joy on Jan. 6.

J.D. Achille's game-high 13 points paced the Pioneers (12-1, 17-2). Ranked No. 1 in the latest District Three Class AAA power ratings — Donegal was second — L-S saw its 16-game win streak snapped. The Pioneers hadn't lost since a 54-49 decision to Octorara on Dec. 10 in the season's second game.

L-S's previous low in terms of point production was 40 in a Dec. 13 win at Warwick.

Donegal also produced its fewest points of the season — its previous low came in the loss to L-S — but the Indians rode their 2-3 zone to victory.

The Pioneers were held to 35 percent (14 of 44) shooting from the field and 24 percent (6 of 25) from 3-point range.

It marked a drastic departure from their previous encounter, when the Pioneers punctured the Indians' man-to-man scheme with great success.

"Last time, we got behind early and had to play 'man' most of the game," said Butt. "Tonight, we got the lead (early) and used the zone more. It was a big help to us."

Jordan Groff put the Pioneers in front at 9-8 with a bucket to close the first quarter, but it was the last lead for L-S. Dylan Houseal, Mike Banwell, Jonathan Sager, Martin Dietrich and Adam Frey fueled a decisive 14-2 run at the start of the second quarter.

Sager, Banwell and Matt Foltz gave the Indians valuable minutes off the bench, combining for seven points and nine boards.

By halftime, Donegal led 24-14 and L-S had been held to 27 percent shooting (6 of 27) from the floor and 20 percent (2 of 10) from beyond the arc.

"I couldn't believe it," John Achille said of his team's first-half showing. "There was a little bit of space (in Donegal's 2-3 zone) along the baseline and in the mid-post, but we weren't aggressive.

"We needed to put the ball on the floor and attack the basket, but we didn't."

L-S's lack of aggressiveness resulted in their attempting just one free throw on the night, and also left them struggling to find forward Jake Sweger, who scored a game-high 20 against Donegal last time. Sweger was 1 for 2 from the floor Tuesday.

Trailing by nine heading into the fourth, L-S cut its deficit to 37-34 on Austin Smucker's baseline jumper. But the Indians closed out their win from the free throw line.

"It's definitely a big win," said Butt. "But there are three games left and we're not overlooking anybody."

Indeed. The Indians are, if anything, zoned in.
