TO THE EDITORS:
I have lived in Mount Joy for 10 years. What I cannot understand here in Lancaster County is why are the Amish allowed to let their horses do their business (droppings) in public parking lots and not clean up after them. In NYC, the horses in Central Park have bags strapped to their behinds to prevent their droppings from falling in the road. I have a dog I must clean up after when she leaves a deposit. It's the law.
Why are the Amish exempt from cleaning up after their horses? I worked at a bank and when horses and carriages left, a deposit was left in the parking lot and the bank janitors had to go out and clean it up.
I shop at a local store. One day, I parked my car and when I came out, yes, you guessed it, there was a load next my car and the horse was gone.
I understand that horses do this while on the road pulling their carriage, but when parked in a public parking area. I would expect the owners to have the courtesy to clean up after their horse.
After all, I have to clean up after my dog or else I am fined. Maybe that is what should be done: Fine the horse owner for littering! Now that is a unique idea.
