Firefighters from more than a dozen companies battled a blaze Tuesday that destroyed a New Providence business.

Only a shell of the two-story brick building that housed Beiler Engine Service, 280 Pennsy Road, remained standing late Tuesday.

Four hours after the fire broke out, crews remained at the scene pouring water on the still-smoldering structure.

Refton Deputy Fire Chief Jesse Adsitt said the building was "pretty well gone" when he arrived with the first engine just after 6 p.m.

"There was heavy smoke and fire in the basement pushing into the first floor," Adsitt said.

He and other firefighters tried to make their way into the basement to battle the blaze from the interior but had to turn around when the building began to collapse, he said.

Adsitt said a state police fire marshal had been called to the scene.

The fire marshal late Tuesday said sparks from a torch fell into the basement, igniting corn fodder stored there.

Damage was estimated at $300,000.

Two firefighters were hurt fighting the blaze; one sustained an ankle injury and the other smoke inhalation, state police said.

Adsitt said the building was "a complete loss."

A home next door to the business was not damaged.

Various engines also were in the building.
