Musicians can find inspiration from the most unlikely sources — something Riley Bria knows all about.
The Lampeter-Strasburg High School freshman won a national songwriting competition for a song he co-wrote with his father, Isaac, based on a poster encouraging readers to "Live, Laugh, Love."
The song, also titled "Live, Laugh, Love," was declared the winner of the Texaco Country Showdown Songwriting Contest. The public was able to cast votes for their favorite entry online.
Now, Riley and his bandmates who helped record the tune are headed to Nashville, Tenn. to accept their reward — $5,000. The band, called Headstrong, will spend the week of Jan. 22 taking in the sights and sounds of the country music capital of the world.
Headstrong's members include the Bria brothers, Jaden, Riley and Spencer, along with Kevin Souders — who has become almost like family. The foursome practices at least three times a week in the Brias' basement, with Souders often joining the family for supper before rehearsals. All live in West Lampeter Township.
While in Nashville, the band will also get the opportunity to perform live at two of the city's venues — The Listening Room and Tootsie's.
Headstrong got its start two years ago when the Bria brothers learned to play a song for a church talent show. A rock band at the time, the brothers invited Souders, who knew more about country music, to join them.
Since then, Headstrong won the state title in the Texaco Country Showdown competition, opened for Franklie Ballard at the York Fair and took second place in a Sea Isle City, N.J. talent competition.
The group also took top honors at the Lampeter-Strasburg Battle of the Bands and has performed at the Lebanon County Fair, Lancaster Catholic Fair, Chester County Hot Air Balloon Festival, a Special Olympics event at Villanova University and the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia Christmas Show.
