Winning it all has become second nature to the Treadling Lambs and a Ram team.

The fleece-to-shawl squad, made up of six students from Lancaster and Dauphin counties, captured its second straight statewide title here at the Pennsylvania Farm Show on Wednesday.

Best of all, the effort was dedicated to "a dear friend and mentor" of the team, Tina Volz of Holtwood, who is battling bladder cancer.

Treadling Lambs and a Ram, which defeated six other teams to win the fleece-to-shawl contest, came up with "an amazing idea to tie it in with Tina and her courage," Hempfield High School sophomore and team spinner Irina Lawrence said.

Tina Volz's husband, Joe, purchased wristbands for his wife's friends to show their support for her, and "those wristbands became our inspiration," the team said.

The team used the colors and design of the bracelet to weave its shawl.

Tina Volz was released from the hospital this week and wasn't well enough to watch the team triumph in person. But she did watch it live online.

The grand-champion shawl brought in $750, which will be donated to help fight bladder cancer in honor of Tina Volz.

Lawrence's teammates include her sister, Tejal, an alternate on the team, and fellow Hempfield High School student Erin Clarkin; Lower Dauphin High School students Julia Angelo and Alex Norris; and Centerville Middle School student Cathy Turner.

"It was amazing," Irina said of Wednesday's triumph.

A favorite of many at the Farm Show, the fleece-to-shawl competition is a youth event where teams develop a design theme and build a display before arriving at the Farm Show complex.

Teams have three hours to complete their shawls.

The teams are evaluated by a panel of four judges and scored on their fleece, spinning, weaving, design and speed.

This week's 96th state Farm Show has enjoyed record attendance, but that also means heavier-than-usual traffic near the show's Harrisburg complex, officials with the event said Wednesday.

Visitors planning to travel to the show through its last day on Saturday are "advised to exercise caution" on roads near the Farm Show complex, according to the event's website, www.farmshow.state.pa.us.

Also Wednesday, the name of another student to receive a coveted Keystone Degree, Alyssa Maxwell of Gap, was added to the list of degree winners from across the state.

The award recognizes those who have demonstrated leadership abilities within their FFA chapter and also have earned or productively invested at least $1,000 or worked at least 300 hours in a supervised agricultural experience program.

Maxwell, 17, is a member of the Pequea Valley chapter of FFA, and also is a senior at Pequea Valley High School.

The president of her FFA chapter for the last three years, she's the daughter of Dave and Beth Maxwell, and has a younger brother, David Jr., 16.

The following events are scheduled for the rest of the week:

• Today — 8 a.m., junior dairy goat showmanship and judging; 1 p.m., special kids rodeo; 6 p.m., state "Equine Showcase."

• Friday — 11:30 a.m., supreme champion wool sheep; 2 p.m., supreme champion dairy cattle; 2:30 p.m., cow milking contest; 3 p.m., best doe of show; 7 p.m., circuit finals rodeo.
