One person was killed and another seriously injured when the motorcycle on which they were riding struck a tree Sunday afternoon in East Earl Township, police reported.
Ronald Ferrara, 46, of Christiana, was driving the 1998 Harley-Davidson Road King west in the 1000 block of Gault Road when he lost control on a curve, investigators said.
Police said the cycle went off the road to the north, traveled 132 feet along the shoulder and then re-entered the roadway. The bike crossed both lanes of travel and then left the south side of the road.
It traveled up an embankment and struck a tree, they said.
The 3 p.m. crash occurred near the Salisbury Township municipal line in the Welsh Mountain area.
Ferrara was pronounced dead at the scene by Lancaster County Deputy Coroner Lisa Billiter. An autopsy will be performed this morning, according to Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni.
Police said a passenger on the bike, 27-year-old Megan Leinhouser of East Earl, sustained multiple broken bones.
She was taken to Lancaster General Hospital, where she was listed in serious condition Sunday night, according to a nursing supervisor.
East Earl Township police Chief Kevin C. McCarthy said investigators didn't know why Ferrara lost control of the cycle.
State police and officials from the Lancaster County District Attorney's Office assisted in the investigation Sunday night.
