Fire struck in the basement of an apartment building in the city Friday morning, according to a fire official.

Firefighters responded to an automatic alarm at Historic Hamilton Suites, 247 N. Duke St., at 4:35 a.m., city fire bureau Capt. Ken Barton said.

A resident said he smelled smoke coming from the basement.

Firefighters quickly extinguished a small fire under the basement stairs, Barton said.

Fire marshals from the city fire bureau and state police are investigating to determine a cause.

"There was minor damage, but there was a lot of potential for it to be a substantial fire," Barton said.

Former Pittsburgh Steelers fullback Dan Kreider and some of his family members bought the apartment building from a group including former state Sen. Gibson E. Armstrong in 2009, newspaper and county records show.

The three-story building is a century old and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
