A 16-year-old Manheim boy suffered major injury when a van struck the horse-drawn buggy he was driving in Rapho Township on Sunday morning, police said.

It appeared that extreme glare and blinding from the sun contributed to the 8 a.m. crash, state police at Ephrata reported Tuesday.

Joel N. Shenk, 34, of Manheim, was driving a van south on North Colebrook Road, just east of Donough Road, when the van struck the back of the horse-drawn buggy, police said. He was driving up a hill at the time of the crash.

The boy and his passenger, a 17-year-old Manheim girl, were thrown from the buggy upon impact, police said.

The boy was thrown into the windshield of the van and suffered major injury, police said. He was transported to Hershey Medical Center for treatment. The girl was not hurt.

Shenk and his five passengers, all of Manheim, were not injured, police said.

No citations were filed in the crash.
