It seems some "sick puppy" is out to injure dogs at the Buchanan Park dog park.

Lancaster city police said two "large chunks of meat" were discovered Monday morning in the park, each loosely embedded with several framing nails.

Umstead said the meat was discovered around 8:50 by a young girl and her father who brought their dog to the park. The meat was lying in the grass just inside the fence on the eastern side of the park. The nails were  "loosely attached" to the underside of the meat.

"The dog wasn't hurt," said police Lt. Todd Umstead. "It didn't even touch the stuff."

Umstead said he has heard of similar incidents at other dog parks, but this was the first local incident.

"It's a really, really sick thing to do," Umstead said.

It is not known how long the meat had been lying in the park.

A neighbor of the city park who also saw the meat told police officer Nelson Ramos, who is investigating the incident, that she plans to erect signs warning dog park users to use caution.

The investigation is continuing. Umstead said anyone with information or who may have witnessed anything suspicious, should call police at 735-3300.
