Voter ID proposal for Pa. panned

TO THE EDITORS:

Proposed bill, HR 934, the so-called "Voter ID bill," now being considered in the state Senate, is nothing but a legislative cattle chute.

Republicans want all voters to have a government identification card. I've heard rumors that Republicans may hire livestock expert Temple Grandin to provide techniques to herd us voters down that passage with a minimum of mooing.

That is, unless we wake up and shake off our customary American voter indifference.

If HB 934 passes, on Election Day, the voter will have to present a Commonwealth-approved photo ID card that contains your name, signature and an expiration date.

Voters without a Pa. driver's license or other government-issued ID would first have to register, then complete an application for a PennDOT-produced voter ID card. Voters with a license or other government ID still have to apply.

HB 934 supporters say the purpose is to prevent voter fraud, but a 2006 Association of County Commissioners' study indicates that voter fraud is practically non-existent.

I say the purpose is to make it more difficult for certain Pennsylvanians without time or resources to vote. I say this feels like legislative fraud.
