More than 120 people rolled into the Elks Lodge on North Duke Street last Sunday to honor the county's best junior bowlers at the annual Lancaster USBC Association's Junior Bowling Banquet.
Briana Ord and Tyler Schickel were named as the recipients of the Marty Summers Scholarship Award, highlighting a night of trophy presentations for high singles, doubles, series and perfect games.
Both 2011 scholarship winners go beyond the lanes with their investment of time in others.
Ord, a Warwick High School graduate, has bowled for 12 years and served on the youth leaders board for three years.
"This past year, Briana not only helped her bowling team, she found out one of her fellow bowlers had autism and took time to help her," Lancaster USBC youth committee member Donna Pannebecker said.
Pannebecker said Ord not only helped her teammate on the lanes, "she took time out to tutor her in math and be there for her when she needed someone to talk to."
The $1,000 scholarship winner is an altar server in her church and also helps her grandparents deliver Meals On Wheels.
"Briana has shown us the true meaning of life," Pannebecker said. "No matter how hard we think we have it, there is always someone in need more than us. Just helping out a little will make that person or situation that much better."
Ord plans to attend St. Francis University.
Schickel, who has bowled for 15 years, has served on the youth and adult bowling boards. He has been on the youth board for five years and was president of the youth leaders this past year.
The McCaskey graduate, who is majoring in electronics at Stevens College, enjoys coaching younger bowlers.
He also mentored a young student through confirmation in his church, where he sings in the choir and helps in his youth group.
"Whenever there is a tournament in our county, you can most likely see Tyler, helping whereever he is needed," Pannebecker said.
Pannebecker is pleased to have youth leaders like these in the sport.
"It gives our young bowlers an opportunity to expand their ability to handle commitment and responsibility," Pannebecker said.
She noted that there is "so much scholarship money available in the sport," and she encourages juniors to earn it.
"This is the only sport that I know that even when you're not the best bowler, you can still win a scholarship by bowling above your average," she said.
Scholarship money earned by younger bowlers is kept in a fund until the bowlers are ready to use it for further education.
Lancaster USBC youth coordinator Donna Gribble, who presented the season awards, said, "It's our pleasure to honor these bowlers who have committed themselves to the sport."
Concerning the loss of two bowling lanes to recent fires, Gribble said, "We are pleased that other establishments have opened opportunities for the juniors who lost their bowling centers at Columbia and Garden Spot."
