Police officers and federal agents seized counterfeit sunglasses and sports memorabilia from more than a half-dozen outdoor vendors Friday at Green Dragon Farmer's Market and Auction in Ephrata, authorities said.
U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Homeland Security agents, state police troopers and Ephrata police participated in the raid, said Lt. Chris McKim, of the Ephrata police.
A Green Dragon official said he believed one person was taken into custody, but no further information was available from law-enforcement officials about that aspect of the raid.
The focus of the operation was the seizure of counterfeit merchandise, McKim said.
Federal agencies will determine if charges should be filed against any of the merchants, he said.
In a similar raid in 2009, state police said they seized counterfeit purses and clothing from nine stands at the market.
Police also arrested 10 men and one woman at that time, charging them with felony counts of trademark counterfeiting and conspiracy.
The owners of The Green Dragon were very cooperative in Friday's seizure, McKim said.
Rob Rohrbach, an owner/manager of the market, said he believed merchandise was seized from seven or eight stands. The vendors all were regulars who had been at the market for several years, he said.
The market owners try to deter the sales of counterfeit merchandise as best they can, Rohrbach said.
For about the past four years, the market has not accepted any new sellers of merchandise such as sunglasses, handbags, clothing, perfume and other commonly counterfeited items, he said.
Also, vendors must sign a document stating they will not sell stolen or counterfeited items.
"We certainly don't condone this stuff, and we do everything we can to stop it," he said.
