Four Lancaster County college students were awarded $2,000 scholarships from AmeriHealth Mercy Health Plan recently.
Kyle Kauffman, Jordan Ludwig, Ellen May and Ngoc-Anh Pham were the four Lancaster students chosen for scholarships.
Kauffman, of Gap, graduated from Octorara Area High School in 2009 and went to Stevenson University in Owing Mills, Md. He hopes that his area of study, public history, will lead him to a career of traveling the globe and working for a museum.
Ludwig, of Denver, is studying respiratory therapy at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster. She is a 2010 graduate of Cocalico High School.
May, a graduate of Manheim Township High School, is a rehabilitation science major at the University of Pittsburgh. She plans to attend graduate school to become an occupational therapist.
Pham, an ESL student from New Holland, is attending Harrisburg Area Community College in Lancaster where she is studying to be a registered nurse. She graduated from Garden Spot High School in 2010.
The scholarship winners were selected out of more than 100 applicants based on a one-page essay describing why education is important to the student. The financial needs of each applicant also were taken into account.
Thirteen other students from Monroe, York, Berks, Northampton and Lehigh counties also were awarded scholarships.
The awards ceremony was held May 26 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the C. Ted Lick Wildwood Conference Center at Harrisburg Area Community College.
