The Strasburg Township supervisors have created a committee of five local volunteers to address the issue of sewer failures in the municipality.

The purpose of the Refton Sewer Committee is to create an Act 537 plan that would bring the township into compliance with the Pennsylvania Sewage Facilities Act. The plan must provide a resolution for current sewage problems and provide for the future sewage disposal needs of the municipality.

The committee will explore the possibilities of connecting to a public system such as the Suburban Lancaster Sewer Authority or the installation of a small treatment facility to address the municipality's current sewage disposal needs.

Committee members met at the supervisors meeting on May 5 and elected Terry Smith chairman, Kevin Peters co-chairman and Christina Peterson secretary. Elvin Hurst and Lance Albright also are serving on the committee.

In other news from the May 5 meeting, the supervisors passed amendment to an ordinance limiting the amount of time a dog is allowed to bark continuously and within a 24-hour period. After an initial warning, infractions will result in a series of increasing fines for the dog's owner.

The job of dog enforcement officer was given to Doug Rubincam, the current assistant zoning officer.
