By unanimous vote, the Hempfield School Board approved the appointment of Ron Zeiber as the Black Knights' new head football coach Tuesday night.
Zeiber, who has 25 years of football coaching experience at the high school level, replaces Bob Forgrave, who posted a record of 19-22 in four seasons at Hempfield.
The Black Knights finished 3-7 last season, after which the school decided to open up the position.
After completing assistant coaching assignments at Reading, Exeter, and Central Dauphin, Zeiber took on head coaching duties at Exeter from 1993-2002, winning the Berks Inter-County League Championship in 1997, and leading the team into the District Three playoffs in 1997 and 1998. His overall record there was 51-43.
Following the 2001-2002 school year, Zeiber took over at Boyertown High School in Montgomery County. His 2006 squad won the Pioneer Athletic Conference (PAC 10) title for the first time in school history (the school's first title since 1977) and qualified for the District One playoffs. His teams also finished second in the PAC 10 conference three times during his tenure.
Zeiber's overall record at Boyertown was 38-31, for a .550 winning percentage that remains the highest in school history.
At the conclusion of the 2007-2008 school year, Zeiber joined the staff at Albright College for the 2008 and 2009 seasons, working as defensive assistant coach with teams that won the MAC conference title and an ECAC South Central Championship.
The father of two accomplished teenaged athletes, Zeiber took a break from coaching last fall to follow his daughter's senior field hockey season.
Honors for Zeiber include Coach of the Year in 1998 in Berks County and in 2006 in the Pioneer Athletic Conference. According to the Reading Eagle, he is the 10th winningest coach in Berks County history (89-74).
Zeiber, the current high school social studies department chair and audio-visual coordinator at Boyertown, will join the secondary social studies department at Hempfield in the fall.
