Defense Attorney Roger Renteria described Bradley D. Isaacs as a "decent kid" who made a bad decision in 2009 by joining four friends in an armed home-invasion robbery in Ephrata.
County Judge Jeffery D. Wright sentenced Isaacs, who was a high school senior at the time of the robbery on Church Street, to 5- to 15-years in state prison.
Isaacs, now 19, provided three guns and a ride for the group that entered an occupied home and threatened the residents, including an infant, according to testimony.
Prior to the robbery, Isaacs had never run afoul of the law, Renteria said.
"It was like Mr. Isaacs went from being a decent kid, a couple months from graduating high school, to being in prison," Renteria told Wright.
The five assailants, led by Thomas J. Greene, stormed the house about 1:30 a.m. and attacked one man in a bedroom. Three intruders carried guns, including one who wielded a shotgun.
Isaacs provided those guns and drove a Ford Mustang to the house, First Assistant District Attorney Christopher P. Larsen said.
"But for the defendant, none of this could have happened," Larsen told the judge.
The robbers, four of whom were teenagers, threatened to kill an infant and sexually assault a woman, investigators said. One occupant was pistol whipped, and another man who was asleep upstairs also scuffled with the intruders.
"But for the grace of God, somebody could have gotten killed that night," Larsen said.
The defendants indicated at prior hearings that the incident was a drug deal gone bad.
Wright refused to accept that as a motive.
"Considering a weapon was pointed at an 8-month-old baby, I don't want to hear anything about a drug deal gone bad," the judge told Isaacs.
The armed intruders knew who would be inside the home, Wright said.
Isaacs said it "wasn't a very smart choice."
"There's nothing I can do to make it up," he said of his crime. "So, I'm going to serve my time."
