Busy Harrisburg Pike was closed in both directions for hours Wednesday morning because of icy conditions.

Drains for the ponds at the Veranda development froze over and water ran onto the roadway in the 2300 block of Harrisburg Pike, East Hempfield Township police Sgt. Joseph Meley said.

Car tires tracked the water about 100 yards in the eastbound lane, eventually creating a "sheet of ice" on the road, he said.

Cheryl Fry, 55, of Manheim, was driving eastbound when she lost control of her sport utility vehicle on an icy patch around 6 a.m., Meley said. She slid sideways off the north side of the road, and the passenger side of the SUV struck a tree.

Fry was extricated from her vehicle around 6:30 a.m. by members of East Petersburg Fire Company, Meley said. She was taken by ambulance to Lancaster General Hospital for treatment.

Fry was listed in fair condition later in the day, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Harrisburg Pike was reopened to traffic at 10:10 a.m. after the state Department of Transportation finished treating the road, Meley said.

Charter Homes & Neighborhoods built the Veranda development but does not manage it, Charter spokeswoman Rebecca Fowler said. Horst Property Management is the property manager for the Veranda Neighborhood Association, Horst spokeswoman Lori Van Gorden said.

On behalf of the association, Van Gorden issued a statement noting that the "the association's board of directors is gathering information on this concern at this time.

"It is cooperating with the township and other authorities during this process. We cannot comment any further until we can gather and analyze all the information."
