Samuel K. Stoltzfus, 27, was trapped upstairs when the two-story frame house at 5137 Peters Road caught fire around 7:40 p.m., officials said.

Fire crews were able to get Stoltzfus out of the burning structure, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Trooper James DeWalt, a state police fire marshal, said Stoltzfus’ younger brother and sister, both teenagers, were also in the house, but were able to escape.

The house was destroyed by fire, DeWalt said. He estimated the material loss at $300,000.

The Stoltzfus parents, who were away Friday evening, were brought home quickly, the trooper added.

The teenage boy told investigators he heard a hissing sound from the basement and went to check on the propane heater, but did not see or hear anything unusual.

A short time later, the residents felt a rumbling, followed by an explosion.

When volunteers from White Horse Fire Company arrived, fire was burning heavily in the basement and up through the first floor.

Unable to go into the house, the firefighters cut a hole in the wall to rescue Stoltzfus.

A deputy coroner determined Stoltzfus died of smoke inhalation, police said. There will be no autopsy.

Water was drawn from tanker trucks that supplied an aerial truck to shoot water onto the house.

DeWalt said firefighters had to work hard to bring the blaze under control and were at the scene well past 2 a.m.

White Horse firefighters were assisted by volunteers from the New Holland, Blue Ball, Churchtown, Witmer, Gordonville, Kinzer, Ronks, Intercourse, Christiana, Gap and Bird-in-Hand fire companies.

According to newspaper records, Stoltzfus’ sister, 12-year-old Rachel Ann Stoltzfus, and her infant niece were killed in 2002 when the horse-drawn buggy they were riding in was struck by a motorist on Route 340.

This morning in Mount Joy Township, firefighters were called to a report of a house fire on Old Hershey Road, near Aberdeen Drive.

County emergency dispatchers received the report shortly after 8 a.m. and sent multiple crews to the scene.

At almost the same time in Mount Joy Township, fire and rescue personnel were dispatched to a report of a serious traffic accident with injuries at Groff Avenue at Campus Road.
