The cause of a fire that destroyed a large West Lampeter Township home on Wednesday has been determined.

"It was electrical," state police Fire Marshal Trooper Brian Herr said. "It started inside the wall in the back corner of the home."

The blaze at the home of Robert Macy at 7 Resch Lane caused about $500,000 in damage, he said. It destroyed the residential part of the structure, valued at between $350,000 and $400,000. The remainder of the damage was to contents.

The fire "pretty much spared" Macy's attached business, Macy Advertising Agency, Herr said.

Five people fled from the fire safely.

Heavy fire and smoke was coming out of the second floor when firefighters from Lampeter and Lafayette fire companies arrived, Lampeter Deputy Chief John Alexander said.

The nearest hydrant was across Millport Road on Southgate Drive, so firefighters had to pull out 1,800 feet of hose to get water to put out the fire, he said.
