Seek what is hidden, move forward

As you’ve been collecting those boxes, have you noticed the symbol hidden in the FedEx logo?

It’s an arrow.

Between the capital “E” and the “x.”

Do you see it?

Cool, huh?

And now that you know it’s there, I have a suspicion the arrow is what you’ll hone-in on every time you see a FedEx truck or receive a FedEx delivery.

That’s what happened to me.

I’m currently enrolled in a professional enrichment course, instructed by Dave Wauls of LMA Consulting Group. He uses the example of the FedEx logo, he said, “to share with people that we go through life and sometimes we miss things that are important to us.”

From a leadership perspective, Wauls noted, it’s important to look a little deeper, a little more discerningly, at our own skills, to determine what we need to do to improve. We need to find what’s hidden in ourselves that will allow us to move forward.

We can take that a step further: We need to see what we don’t initially see in others, as well.

The lesson of the arrow is one that can extend to all walks of life. What’s hidden in our co-workers? Our family members? Our friends and neighbors?

Do we really see all that we ought to see? Do we really see what’s there?

I tested some friends at a party recently, to see how many of them knew about the hidden arrow.

Only two did and I knew they would — Ted, who works for FedEx and his wife, Gail! The others, however, were amazed — as I had been — at how, despite looking at that logo for decades, they’d never noticed the arrow.

I didn’t share the “lesson” with them that evening, though — the one about how “we go through life and sometimes we miss things that are important to us.”

Because that night it would have taken on another meaning. As happy as we were to be together, we were missing some people who are important to us.

Scott and Lisa, who are part of our circle of friends and cherished for their humor and kindnesses, were not at the party because ... well, they had some hidden arrows.

Most of us didn’t see the circumstances that might prompt these native Lancaster Countians to move away. But the arrows were always right there, pointed to career advancement, new challenges, a passion for deep-sea fishing and lots of warm sunshine.

Moving forward, for this couple, meant moving southward; Florida lured them with an attractive package.

Although their arrows grazed the hearts of friends, Scott and Lisa had to do it — to see if their dreams might come true.

And so, for their sakes, I hope The Man Upstairs absolutely, positively delivers.
