The hunter, whose identity is not being released yet by troopers, fired several shots at a deer Monday afternoon while hunting in a field next to the Hess Express service station in Brickerville, police said.

The bullets missed the deer, and one round struck a gas pump at the Hess station at the northeast corner of routes 501 and 322 in Elizabeth Township, Trooper Robert Maher said.

William Huffman, of New Oxford, Adams County, was pumping gas into his vehicle when he heard the gunshots at about 1:45 p.m.

“He (Huffman) stated he heard a bullet pass by him and another bullet hit the gas pump. The bullet hit the top of the gas pump causing minor damage,’’ the trooper said.

Police have identified the hunter, and the incident is being investigated as “reckless endangering another person.’’ The investigation continues, and criminal charges are pending, Maher said.

Also on Monday afternoon, a man in a pickup truck pulled up beside a farm home in Bart Township and pointed a handgun at two young adult women who were working outside, Lancaster state police said.

Nobody was hurt. The incident happened about eight miles from the site of the fatal Amish school shootings on Oct. 2 in the Nickel Mines area of Bart Township.

The two women, both in their early 20s, were raking leaves outside their home in the 700 block of Mount Pleasant Road, north of Route 372, at about 12:15 p.m. Monday when a green pickup truck pulled up and stopped in front of the home, Trooper Ryan L. Stephens said.

The driver, described as a white

male in his 40s, sat in the truck for about a minute. When the two women approached the truck to find out what the man wanted, he pointed a handgun at them, Stephens said.

“He didn’t say a word,’’ said Stephens.

The man then drove away from the home. His truck was last seen heading south on Mount Pleasant Road toward Route 372.

The handgun that the man pointed was black with “a little bit of yellow in it,’’ police were told.

State police have classified the incident as simple assault. Anyone with information related to the incident is asked to contact Lancaster state police at 299-7650.

Another alleged assault case involving a gun has resulted in East Hempfield Township police filing charges against a young Columbia-area man.

Police said Anderson B. Smith, 18, of 2614 Ironville Pike, Columbia, fired a BB gun from a moving vehicle in the 1500 block of Columbia Avenue, just west of the Lancaster Township line, at about 8:30 p.m. on Nov. 17.

One BB struck a marked police cruiser. Another BB struck the leg of a man who was pumping gas in the area, police said.

Charges of criminal mischief and simple assault were filed against Smith on Wednesday, police said.
