Olympic gold medalist Billy Mills will talk at Lancaster Mennonite School's Fine Arts Center at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 20.
Mills won the 10,000 meters in 1964 in one of the greatest upsets in Olympic track history. He set two world records and has been selected as the top motivational/inspirational international speaker by Toastmasters.
A major motion picture, "Running Brave," tells the story of his life. He is the national spokesperson for Christian Relief Services and Running Strong for American Indian Youth.
During his Saturday morning talk, Mills will share how he came from one of the poorest Indian reservations and overcame prejudice and long odds to achieve his stunning Olympic victory.
The school expects a sellout crowd at this event, which is being held during National Native American Month. Prior to his talk, he will serve as the official starter at the school's annual 5K Walk Run event that starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Lancaster Campus on Lincoln Highway East.
The evening before, Mills will attend a VIP reception (7-9 p.m.) and will meet with the Lancaster Mennonite High School cross-country team members. Mills has agreed to personally autograph a limited number of posters from his Olympic race. This is Mill's first visit to this area. His appearance is being sponsored by Turkey Hill and Willow Valley/Doubletree Resort.
