A young Morgantown woman has been charged in a collision that killed a Terre Hill bicyclist in April.

Stephanie Britton, 19, was charged Monday with careless driving (causing a death) and driving a vehicle at an unsafe speed, East Earl Township police Chief Kevin C. McCarthy said.

Norman Hurst, 28, was riding a bicycle on Union Grove Road, about 300 feet east of Reading Road (Route 625), when he was struck April 21, police said.

Britton was driving west on Union Grove Road when she failed to negotiate a curve, police said. Her car crossed through the eastbound lane and struck Hurst and his bicycle head-on in the eastbound shoulder of the road.

Britton was driving 48 mph in a 30-mph zone at the time, police said.

After striking Hurst, her car hit a large pine tree and came to rest in the parking lot of Bethany Grace Fellowship Church, police said.

Hurst was pronounced dead at the scene.

Britton sustained a minor injury, police said.

McCarthy said that PennDOT, with help from state Sen. Mike Brubaker's office, promptly improved Union Grove Road within two weeks after the fatal wreck.

"(Britton) was coming over a hill crest and going around a curve," he said of the wreck. "The road was banked the wrong way, and it had been raining earlier that day."

The road had long been banked incorrectly because of large rocks, McCarthy said.

The Lancaster County district attorney's office and the county's crash team assisted East Earl police in the investigation.
