The damage spree began about 7:30 p.m. In most cases the vandals, believed to be juveniles or young adults in a small red car, would stop behind a parked vehicle, heave a brick, rock or piece of cement through the back windshield, and drive away.
"It's just ignorant to do something like this,'' said Lititz police Officer Jared Hahn.
"They have no respect for someone else's property. And somebody could really have been hurt if they had been in a car that was struck,'' said the officer.
Each victim will probably have to shell out between $300 and $1,000 to repair the damage, depending on the size of the window and if there is additional damage to the framework or other features, such as an OnStar system, police said.
At least one vehicle had damage to both the back and front windshields, police noted.
"It's hard for us to imagine that kids would want to cause this kind of damage,'' said Sharon Riegel, of the 500 block of South Spruce Street in Lititz. At about 8 p.m., a slab of cement was thrown through the back windshield of her Honda Civic.
"This caused a lot of unnecessary work and inconvenience. There is glass in every nook and cranny of our car. All we can do right now is just tape it up,'' Riegel said.
Lititz police took 14 window-smashing reports Saturday night. Close to half of the victims lived in Riegel's neighborhood -- around South Spruce Street, West Sixth Street and on West End Avenue. Cars also were damaged on Kissel Hill Road, north of the Lititz Library; 100 block of North Cedar Street; 100 block of East Front Street; and on North and South Oak streets.
Warwick Township police took 21 brick-throwing or rock-throwing reports on Saturday night, lasting until about midnight. The vandals damaged 20 cars and also tossed a brick through a house window, police said.
Three of the Warwick Township victims lived on Crosswinds Drive, just west of Spruce and West Sixth streets. Most of the other Warwick Township incidents were on roads north of Lititz leading to Brunnerville.
The Warwick officers took three damage reports on Brookwood Drive and on Field Lane, two on Sherri Lane, and one each on Knights Bridge Way, Fox Run Terrace, Laurel Ridge, Ashley Drive, Brookfield Road, Cambridge Lane, Snyder Hill Road, Brunnerville Road, Laurie Lane and Owl Hill Road.
Anyone with information about the vandals is asked to call Lititz police at 626-6393 or Warwick Township police at 626-3162.
In the 100 block of Snyder Hill Road in Elizabeth Township, just north of Warwick Township, a brick was thrown through the bathroom window of the home of Donald Nelson Newhard, 53, Lititz, Ephrata state police said. The incident happened shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, and the suspects immediately fled.
