A 19-year-old Lancaster County man remained missing late Thursday after a diving accident earlier in the day near Peach Bottom, state police said.
The man was with a group of friends when he dove from a cliff into the Susquehanna River and then failed to surface, according to Trooper Chad Dohner.
Dohner declined to identify the teen Thursday out of respect for the man's family.
"It was kids being kids, and it went terribly wrong," he said.
Emergency crews from Lancaster and Harford (Md.) counties responded to the area of Benton Hollow Road just after 6 p.m.
Dive teams were called in to search the water while canines were used on the ground, according to Rob Sample Jr., deputy chief of Robert Fulton Fire Company.
Sample said the incident occurred near Ferncliff Wildflower and Wildlife Preserve at a popular gathering spot.
He said the area has 20- to 30-foot cliffs and a sweeping view of the Susquehanna River.
Sample said 25 to 30 people were there when emergency crews arrived at the scene Thursday.
A dive team remained in the water late Thursday, but Sample said he expected the search to be called off before midnight.
He said crews are likely to resume the search today.
