The convenience store robbery was unfolding as most do.
That was until the suspect rested his weapon on the counter and started counting the loot and an alert clerk took control of the BB gun, police said.
Police have arrested an 18-year-old who they allege held up the Turkey Hill in Willow Street at gunpoint Thursday morning.
Collin Robert Shaab, of 85 Goods Road, Conestoga, entered the store at 2921 Willow Street Pike with the BB gun around 3 a.m., West Lampeter Township police said. He demanded cash from the clerk.
After the clerk handed him money, Shaab put the gun on the counter and began to count the cash, police said. The clerk then picked up the gun, and Shaab fled in a white Honda.
Township police arrived and broadcast a description of the suspect and his car to other police departments.
A short time later, Southern Regional police observed a vehicle matching the description, and police from the two departments worked together to apprehend Shaab at his home, police said.
In addition to the BB gun, the stolen money was recovered, police said.
Shaab was charged with robbery and making terroristic threats, West Lampeter police said. He was committed to Lancaster County Prison in lieu of $35,000 cash bail.
