Brandon Detweiler's quest for a Pennsylvania Golf Association Amateur Championship fell short for the third straight year Wednesday.

Detweiler, who plays out of Lancaster Country Club, carded 5-over 77 Wednesday at Nemacolin Woodlands Resort in Farmington to end up alone in fifth place.

Detweiler, who started the day two shots off the lead after firing 3-under 69 in each of the first two rounds, finished seven shots behind Philadelphia Country Club's Cory Siegfried, who completed a wire-to-wire victory with an even-par 72 Wednesday.

Siegfried's three-day total of 8-under 208 was three shots better than runner-up Grant Martens of Wildwood Golf Club.

Lancaster Country Club's Matt Smith — the only other Lancaster County player to make the cut — shot 2-over 74 for the third straight day Wednesday to finish tied for 17th.

Detweiler, a senior-to-be at North Carolina State University this fall, began to fade Wednesday when he made double bogey on the 465-yard, par-4 second.

He made another bogey at the par-5 fifth before making the turn in 3-over 39, leaving him 3-under for the championship.

Meanwhile, Siegfried, who was playing in the final group with Detweiler, was padding his lead.

Sparked by three birdies in a four-hole stretch from Nos. 5-8, Siegfried fired 2-under 34 on the front side to get to 10-under for the tournament.

Siegfried eventually cooled off a bit on the back, where he posted 2-over 38, but he still had more than enough cushion.

Detweiler also shot 2-over 38 on the back nine to finish with a three-day total of 1-under 215. He was one of only five players to finish the tournament under par.

It was the third straight year that Detweiler made a run at the state amateur title, having finished third in 2008 at Saucon Valley and tied for 12th last year at Waynesborough Country Club.

Three-time champion H. H. Billy Haverstick (1938, 1948 and 1950) and Pete Toole (2001) are the only two players from Lancaster County to win the state amateur since it began in 1909.
