Scott Seiss (first photo) of Rocky Ridge, Md., prepares to take a corner Saturday during the handcycling competition, part of the Grandview Grand Prix held in the Grandview Heights neighborhood of Manheim Township.

Seiss won the race.

The U.S. Handcycling Federation, based in Colorado Springs, Colo., put the race on its national challenge. The nonprofit corporation "is designed to create integrated cycling opportunities for wheelchair users and athletes with lower-mobility impairments," its website notes.

Finishing third Saturday was Geoff Hopkins (second photo) of Fredericksburg, Va. He is a member of the Paralized Veterans Racing team.

The competition is one of the U.S. Handcycling Series — 37 individual races at 19 events — and is the only federation event in the mid-Atlantic this year.

It was also the first time Grandview opened its competition, which has categories for cyclists of all ages, to handcyclers.
