Motorists lined up Friday morning as word spread that gasoline was selling for 94 cents a gallon at the Turkey Hill store on South Broad Street in Lititz.

"I was looking at the news and said, 'That's our Turkey Hill,' and I said, 'I'm there,'" Daryl Carter, 31, of South Cedar Street in Lititz, said.

So he jumped into his Dodge Magnum and drove to the convenience store.

The construction worker said he uses a lot of gas driving to his job in Denver. It usually takes about $40 to fill his vehicle's tank; Friday morning, he paid $9.50 cash for the 10 gallons he was allowed at that price. His savings was $16.50 over the regular price.

The last time unleaded regular sold for 94 cents a gallon was in 1988, according to The World Almanac.

The hourlong special was a promotion for Windstream. The telecommunications company was drawing attention to its new retail location at 1004 A Lititz Pike. The store's grand opening was Friday afternoon.

The special gas price was used to highlight Windstream's "Lifetime" price for bundled digital television, phone service and high-speed Internet. The $94.99 price is guaranteed not to change.

Carter said he didn't know what the promotion was about, only that he wanted in on it.

"Thanks, Windstream," he said when he learned the company was responsible.

Barb Murray didn't have far to go to take advantage of the special price. She did, however, have to wait.

Murray, who works at AAA Central Penn next door, got in line when the promotion began at 10 a.m. She waited 45 minutes to get her tank filled.

At 10:40 a.m., as cars were still lined up out to the street, Turkey Hill workers changed the sign to the regular price: $2.599 per gallon.

"I just got lucky," said Zachary O'Grady, who hadn't heard about the promotion but had stopped to fill up his mother's Toyota Highlander.

O'Grady spent only about 20 minutes in line and $9.50 in cash.

About a dozen Windstream workers, the "Lifetime team," pumped the gas. Some are local employees, while some are moving from area to area as Windstream does the promotion and opens stores, said Windsteam's Stephanie Summers.
