This event is new, but already seems to be promising in raising funds for the Lititz Elementary PTO.
In the past, the school has participated in organizing, selling and distributing goods from various companies, only to get a portion of the proceeds. This year, the PTO decided to try a fund-raiser that would eliminate the door-to-door selling and concentrate more on the student’s physical participation.
The PTO accepted the task of sending out mailers (about 5,700 of them) to family and friends of each of the students asking for tax deductible monetary sponsorships, eliminating the door-to-door sales by the students. This was achieved by having each student supply as many names and addresses as they could on a sheet of address labels.
Another incentive was that the more names the student’s supplied, the more prizes they would earn, such as a “Pajama Day Card” or a “Homework Pass” for each 15 names supplied. Also, for every 15 names supplied, the student’s name would get entered into a drawing for a grand prize of either a $100 gift card to Toys R Us or an Apple Ipod. A ribbon will be awarded to every child that participates.
Teachers of Lititz Elementary School are also encouraged to collect sponsors. By doing this, 50 percent of their total sponsorship amount will go back into their classroom for books and supplies.
Children and teachers will walk/jog a predetermined route for one hour. Assisting with the walk will be some generous volunteers from the Lititz Elementary “POPS” team (Parents-On-Patrol) and the Lititz Police Department. Race times for the students will be 8:45 to 9:45 a.m. for kindergarten (A.M.), first and second grades; 10 to 11 a.m. for third and fourth grades; and 1 to 2 p.m. for kindergarten (P.M.), fifth and sixth grades.
Between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. there will be a picnic lunch, including hot dogs and hamburgers for the participants. For an extra special treat, there will be a surprise guest joining the student’s for lunch.
So, if you happen to be in the Lititz Elementary area of Lititz on Friday, Oct. 27 and see a group of children walking through the streets, please cheer them on and show your support. In the meantime, if you happen to receive a letter in the mail from a special Lititz Elementary student, please help him/her to make this event a success.
