Lancaster city firefighters have been called to the Lancaster County government services building at 150 N. Queen St. several times over the past week.

They weren't called to tackle any flames.

Instead, they were called when people got stuck in one of the building's elevators.

"It's been frustrating," Charlie Douts, county administrator, said.

People have gotten stuck in one of the building's three elevators off West Chestnut Street at least four times since last week because of mechanical problems.

Douts said to his knowledge the longest someone was stuck was 10 minutes.

When the doors don't open, people hit the emergency call button, which sounds an automatic alarm detected by city firefighters.

The alarm triggers the dispatch of rescue crews.

"Usually, we have the people off the elevator before the fire department gets here," Douts said.

A contractor worked on the elevator twice within the past week, but Douts said the problems persist.

"We finally took it out of service (Tuesday) because it was such a headache," he said.

It will remain out of service until county officials feel it has been properly repaired.
