A woman sustained a minor burn and singed hair when she tried to put out a small fire in her Lancaster Township apartment Tuesday morning, an official said.

There were no other injuries in the 10:30 a.m. fire at Factory Apartments, 616 S. West End Ave., according to Glenn Usdin, deputy fire chief in Lancaster Township. The fire was in a second-floor apartment.

The woman who lives in that apartment declined to give her name. She said she smelled something and discovered the fire in a closet of her bedroom.

She tried unsuccessfully to put out the fire with an extinguisher and also by smothering it with clothes from a laundry basket, she said. She was burned and her hair was singed in the process.

Firefighters arrived and quickly extinguished the fire, Usdin said. Damage was estimated at $2,500 to contents of the apartment.

The cause of the fire was being investigated, he said.

Firefighters arriving at the scene found that a hydrant near 630 S. West End Ave. was broken and inoperable, they said. Another one nearby was tapped to provide water for fighting the fire.
