Firefighters responded to a report of an apartment building fire at Hershey Heritage Village, 675 Wyncroft Lane, Lancaster Township, on Sunday evening.

A child playing with a sparkler dropped the firework into a mulch pile next to the building, igniting several bushes and trees, Lancaster Township Fire Chief Ron Comfort Jr. said. Flames from the plants then spread to the building's exterior.

Residents of three apartments were evacuated, but they were allowed to return once the blaze was extinguished, Comfort said. Damages were estimated at $5,000.

Also Sunday, firefighters from at least nine companies converged on a brush fire in a secluded area near 753 River Road, Martic Township, around 2 p.m.

A county emergency dispatcher said the fire wasn't particularly large, but it was in a difficult place to reach with hoses and other equipment.

Fire company officials could not immediately be reached for more information Sunday evening.
