Man uses baseball bat to hit woman in her car

A man tried to get into the vehicle of a woman at a stop sign Thursday night in East Petersburg.

When he couldn't, the man reached through the vehicle's open window and hit the woman with a baseball bat.

Manheim Township Police said the woman did not know the man.

The assault happened at 10:14 p.m. at Jefferson and High streets, in the northwestern part of the borough.

A male passenger in the vehicle chased the assailant on foot but was unable to catch him. The woman was not injured.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his mid-20s with a goatee, about 6 feet tall and weighing 250 pounds.

INDECENT ASSAULT:
Dale Allen Jones, 19, of New Providence, was charged following an incident with a 21-year-old woman at the Willow Street shopping center June 24.

GAS LEAK:
Lancaster city firefighters evacuated three homes and turned off a gas line early Saturday after a city man nicked a gas pipe in a home at 23 Lee Ave.

Jonathan S., Hooper was doing renovations at the home and accidentally drove a nail through the pipe.

Firefighters evacuated the home, and two adjoining ones, and shut off the gas meter in the basement until UGI workers could arrive, said Lancaster City Fire Capt. Ed Haubert.

THEFT:
Police are investigating thefts from five unlocked vehicles overnight June 30-July 1 in the 400 block of Conoy Avenue and the first block of Windemere Court in Mount Joy Township. Items taken include a 15-round, .40-caliber Glock firearm magazine, a GPS, a purse containing $15, and a carton of cigarettes.

• Manheim Township police reported items were taken from vehicles parked in and near Bausman in Lancaster Township.

A purse was taken on Roselle Avenue, with a loss of $300, and a small amount of change was taken on Montrose Avenue, both overnight Thursday into Friday.

Two men were seen running from a vehicle that had its window smashed early Saturday at an office building at 1339 Millersville Pike. A small amount of change was taken.

• A window was smashed on a vehicle parked outside Penn Cinema, 541 W. Airport Road, between 9:20 p.m. and 10:20 p.m. Wednesday. A GPS unit was taken, Manheim Township police reported.

• A York man reported $1,000 damage was done to his vehicle during an attempted theft when the vehicle was parked at Conestoga Fuels, 1142 Elizabeth Ave., between Tuesday and Thursday. A window was smashed and a door was damaged, according to Manheim Township police.

• An air conditioner worth $150 was taken Thursday from a window of an office in the 900 block of New Holland Avenue, Manheim Township police reported.

• Adrian Rodriguez Jr., 33, of the 600 block of Baumgardner Road, was charged with stealing a wallet containing $80 in cash and credit cards, and making five purchases with the credit cards May 31, police reported.

DUI:
Police said three people were cited for drunken driving, pending blood test results, during a DUI checkpoint conducted in Leola late Friday and early Saturday.

Cited were: Gordon Kovacevic, 32, of the 100 block of Bridle Path, New Holland; Sean Smith, 39, of Pottstown; and Thomas Cusack, 32, of the first block of South Hershey Avenue, Leola.

• Thomas P. Cole, 41, of Savo Avenue, was cited for DUI Saturday after a traffic stop on the Oregon Pike, Manheim Township police reported.

• Bon Buthdy, 35, of North Plum Street, was cited for DUI Friday after a traffic stop on the Lititz Pike, Manheim Township police reported.

• Jeffrey L. Metz, 50, of Pequea, was cited for DUI Saturday after a traffic stop on Marticville Road, police reported.

• Gregory W. Laubach Jr., 35, of Manheim Township, was cited for DUI and fleeing/attempting to elude a police officer Saturday after a traffic stop that started on the Lititz Pike and ended, after a brief pursuit, on Ashford Drive, Manheim Township police reported.

UNDERAGE DRINKING:
Raul Tyson, 18, of Lancaster and a 16-year-old New Holland girl were cited for underage drinking Wednesday, after police found them in the 300 block of Prospect Street, police reported.

BURGLARY:
A laptop, valued at $1,500, was taken Friday from a home on Deep Hollow Lane in Lancaster Township, Manheim Township police reported.

ATTEMPTED BURGLARY: A male wearing dark clothing and a light-colored cap, carrying an orange-and-gray backpack, tried to break into the Pequea Valley Public Library, 31 Center St., Intercourse, Thursday. Police ask anyone with information to call 299-7650.

FIRE: A Manheim Township home suffered $75,000 in damage in a fire early Friday morning. The fire started in the attic, either from smoking or an unattended candle, at the home of Gayle and James Spicer, 2000 block of Lititz Pike, said Neffsville Fire Company Chief Mike Elliott.

RETAIL THEFT: Keith R. Cavna, 32, of Columbia Avenue, was charged with retail theft and possession of drug paraphernalia Friday at the Giant supermarket, 2074 Fruitville Pike, Manheim Township police reported.

HIT AND RUN:
Manor Township police are looking for a white Ford Ranger pickup truck that struck a mailbox and a PennDOT sign Friday in the 800 block of Letort Road. The truck will have damage to the right side mirror and is missing a red tail light. Police ask anyone with information to call 299-5231.

• A resident of the 100 block of East Sixth Street in Lititz told police a vehicle knocked over her mailbox Tuesday. Loss was $150.

ACCIDENTS:
Paul Bagaindoc, 39, of Egg Harbor Township, N.J., received minor injuries when his vehicle was struck from the rear by a vehicle driven by Barrett P. Hoffer, 18, of Hummelstown Tuesday at 3595 Lincoln Highway East.

• Larry R. Sheets Sr., 53, of Aberdeen, Md. was injured Tuesday when he lost control of his motorcycle while braking to avoid a car driven by Bonnie M. Ray, 59, of Strasburg, who had entered Sheets' lane of travel in Martic Township, police reported. Sheets was taken to Lancaster General Hospital.

• A 17-year-old Quarryville boy lost control of his car Tuesday on Drytown Road after becoming distracted by a spider on his leg, police reported. The car struck a utility pole and rolled onto its roof.

DISORDERLY CONDUCT:
Melvin Eugene Auker, 50, of the 700 block of Lincoln Avenue, Ephrata, was cited Saturday after Ephrata Borough police received reports of an assault around 10:21 a.m. Police said Auker had threatened and struck a victim in the first block of Lincoln Avenue.

• Joel M. Suriano, 25, of Ephrata, was cited Saturday, after Ephrata Borough police reportedly found him at 2:17 a.m. sleeping in his car in the 900 block of Opal Street with his car stereo blaring.

• Pamela J. Morris, 54, of Ephrata, was cited Friday after being warned to turn down the stereo in her apartment at 10:27 p.m. Police said she turned it up again just after borough officers left, requiring them to return.

SIMPLE ASSAULT: New Holland Borough police said Gideon Dehaven, 41, of West Main Street, New Holland, will be mailed a summons for allegedly punching his son's 20-year-old friend several times around 3 p.m. Saturday, causing facial injuries.
