“As I was watching them walking down the streets, I could see the kids smiling,” Barry Clippinger says. “Even the high school kids were coming a little earlier than I anticipated, walking up the hill.”

It was a good omen for the first day of school at Columbia, where all three schools opened without any problems, Clippinger said.

It is also the first day for the School District of Lancaster. Superintendent Rita Bishop was out touring the 21 school buildings making sure everything was in order.

She said the administrators were well prepared and the teachers were “actively engaging” students.

And, Bishop was impressed with how smoothly everything was running at McCaskey High School.

“It’s going to be a great year,” Bishop said.

Warwick is the last school district to start. It’s first day is Wednesday, Sept. 6.
