Continuing its strategy of growing in the Midwest, Turkey Hill Minit Markets is planning to open its first three stores in Indianapolis by year-end.
"We feel we're a good fit for that market and that we can provide a good service to them," said Turkey Hill spokeswoman Erin Dimitriou Smith.
Lancaster-based Turkey Hill, the county's largest convenience store chain, already is a familiar name to Indianapolis residents.
The iced tea and ice cream made by the chain's sister company, Turkey Hill Dairy, are staples in that community's supermarkets.
"Bringing our stores out there is a natural extension" of the dairy's success, Smith said on Tuesday.
The three new stores will be typical Turkey Hill units, with the usual selection of food items, plus a coffee bar, gas pumps and about 25 employees each, she said.
Smith declined to disclose the cost of developing the stores.
Turkey Hill has one other Indiana store, in Martinsville, which opened in 2008. It also has seven in Ohio, dating to last fall.
In contrast, Turkey Hill has 248 stores in Pennsylvania, including 61 in Lancaster County.
The company opened its original convenience store, on Columbia Avenue, in 1967. The store recently was closed in favor of a new location at Columbia Avenue and Rohrerstown Road, formerly a vacant Exxon station.
