With 2,757 runners and walkers already registered, Saturday's 12th annual Race Against Racism is on track to be the largest.

"We're hoping to have a record number of registrations," said John Jascoll, spokesman for the YWCA of Lancaster.

Usually, the 5-kilometer footrace and walk gets nearly 3,000 participants, Jascoll said. The number of people already signed up is higher than pre-registration totals from previous years, and more registrations are expected, he said.

Anyone interested in doing the run or walk may register at the YWCA, 110 N. Lime St., from 6:15 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and from 6:15 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday.

Registration also is available Saturday before the race, from 7 to 8:30 a.m. at Musser Park, North Lime and East Chestnut streets.

The race will begin at 9 a.m. A Kids' Fun Run, for children 12 and younger, will begin at 8:30 a.m.

For adults, the registration fee is $25. For children 12 and younger, the fee is $10.

All proceeds from the event support the YWCA's racial justice initiatives, including a school-based anti-bias curriculum, study circles for people of all ages and backgrounds and three-day racial justice workshops.

Registration is not required to participate in the Humanity Fest that will be held from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Musser Park.

The Humanity Fest will include ethnic foods, handmade crafts from around the world, fair-trade goods, works of local artisans, multicultural entertainment and information on local nonprofit organizations.

Lancaster city police will close the 100 block of North Lime Street and the 200 block of East Chestnut Street on Saturday at 6 a.m. The race course, which includes portions of Marshall, Franklin, Reservoir and Lehigh streets, will be closed as the runners and walkers proceed. All streets are expected to reopen by 10:30 a.m., Jascoll said.

All registered runners and walkers will receive a 12th anniversary Race Against Racism T-shirt and other gift items.
