You had to know the weather this past weekend was too good to last.

Sunny.

Highs in the mid 70s.

In mid-March.

"The weather we've been seeing has been unseasonably warm," said National Weather Service forecaster Craig Evanego.

Well, a wet start to the week is expected to usher in a return to normalcy by Thursday

Daytime highs in the mid 50s.

Nighttime lows around freezing.

Typical late March weather.

According to Evanego, rain is expected to start soaking Lancaster County around 9 a.m. today.

After depositing as much as an inch by late tonight, the rain is expected to break into scattered showers that are likely to last into Tuesday.

Both days should still be fairly mild, Evanego said, with highs in the low 60s.

Similar temperatures are predicted for Wednesday, when the sun should peek through the clouds, Evanego said.

Thursday is when the May weather leaves and the March weather returns.

The forecast for Thursday through the weekend calls for partly sunny skies, with lows in the low 30s and highs in the mid 50s — normal temperatures for late March, according to Millersville University's Weather Information Center.

That's a drop of about 20 degrees from Sunday's temperatures, which peaked at 75 degrees around 3 p.m. on the first full day of spring.

As warm as it was Sunday, we were still well off the record high of 86 degrees, set in 1921.

Of course, by the same token, we also were well above the record low of 10 degrees, set in 1956.
