A man came up behind a teller outside a Fulton Bank branch in Quarryville at about 7:30 a.m. Saturday and tried to force her to take him inside, Quarryville police said.
The man stuck something in her back as she was getting out of her car at the bank at 200 TownsEdge Drive, in the TownsEdge Shopping Village, police said; the teller thought it might have been a gun, but did not see a gun.
The teller told the would-be robber that she did not have the keys to the bank. He struck her on the side of the head and then ran south toward a Citgo gas station, police said.
The bank in the TownsEdge Shopping Center was not entered and nothing was taken from the victim, police said.
The suspect was described as a thinly built white man in his late 20s to early 30s. He had a mustache and was wearing a hooded, charcoal gray sweatshirt with a zipper, dark pants and dark shoes, police said.

FIRES: City fire officials said a discarded cigarette caused a fire early Saturday at an apartment building at 132 N. Prince St. The blaze started on a wooden deck to the rear of a second-floor apartment and quickly spread inside, according to Battalion Chief Brian Klugh. Initial reports of persons trapped were unfounded, he said. Crews remained on the scene until 5:45 a.m.
•Firefighters in the southern part of the county were dispatched for several brush fires Saturday afternoon.
ROBBERIES: A 14-year-old boy told city police that another teen punched him and took his iPod Thursday as he was walking home from school in the 500 block of East Frederick Street.
•Lancaster police said a 20-year-old male was struck and robbed at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday in the first block of West James Street. Taken from the victim was $25 cash, bank cards and a cell phone.
ARRESTS: Two men were arrested around 10:15 p.m. Friday after state police spotted an expired registration sticker and stopped their car on Route 272, Providence Township.
Carlos Ricardo Torres, 40, of the 400 block of South Lime Street, was charged with driving with a suspended license, driving without insurance and driving an unregistered vehicle, police said.
One of the passengers in the car, Ivan Suarez, 20, of the 600 block of South Christian Street, was charged with possession of marijuana, troopers said.
DUI: New Holland Police charged Adam J. Byers, 28, of Old Mill Road, Ephrata, with drunken driving after he was stopped for driving erratically Saturday in the 100 block of North Shirk Road.
•Josh Raser, 25, of the 300 block of West Swartzwille Road, Denver, is facing drunken driving charges after he was stopped for driving erratically Saturday in the 600 block of Reinholds Road. Charges are pending the results of a blood-alcohol test.
TRESPASSING: Gary W. Stephany, 50, of the 400 block of Franklin Street, Denver, was cited for defiant trespassing by New Holland police Detective Jonathan Heisse, police said.
Stephany was observed attending an event in the auditorium at Garden Spot High School, 669 E. Main St., New Holland, at 7:20 p.m. Wednesday after having previously been notified by school officials to stay off school property, police said.
THEFTS: A purse containing bank cards, $115 cash and a cell phone was stolen Thursday at 415 N. Prince St., city police said. Also Thursday, a purse and a cell phone were stolen from a vehicle parked at the same location.
•A 21-year-old Narvon man told New Holland police that a cellular phone, an iPod and cash, total value $340, were stolen from a locker at the New Holland Recreation Center, Earl Township, while he was working out there Monday. The theft was reported at 8:34 Monday, police said.
DRINKING CHARGES: James W. Walcott, 50, of the 500 block of East Main Street, New Holland, was witnessed staggering in the 200 block of West Main Street at about 6:35 p.m. Friday and was issued a citation for public drunkenness, New Holland police said.
•Basilio M. Diaz-Cruz III, 33, Lancaster, was arrested for driving under the influence after he was stopped shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday for speeding in his car on Route 222 South, near Buch Road in West Earl Township, state police at Ephrata said.
A small bag, suspected to hold marijuana, was observed in the vehicle, police said; Diaz-Cruz is facing charges for DUI and several other offenses.
•Kelly S. Boske, 47, of Brimmer Avenue, New Holland, was cited for public drunkenness after she was involved in a bicycle crash Saturday in the 400 block of Brimmer Avenue in the borough.
VANDALISM: State police at Ephrata reported about $200 of damage after a van was vandalized while it was parked behind the Wingnuts Garage, 126 E. 28th Division Highway, Elizabeth Township.
The vehicle's hood and side were scratched sometime between 8 a.m. Monday and 4 p.m. Wednesday, police said. Anyone with information is asked to call troopers at 721-7667.
•State police said vandals caused $100 damage to the garage of a residence on Main Street, Honey Brook, overnight Thursday.
